You simply need to approach the control panel, turns the knob to open the valve, and then presses the button for ignition. Within the pilot assembly, where the spark rod ignites a pilot, there is a thermocouple. The thermocouple, when near a flame (warmed) generates a small voltage and maintains a signal of sorts to the valve assembly that a flame is present, and that it is okay to continue with the flow of fuel. If the flame at the burner is extinguished, the thermocouple will cool, the voltage through the thermocouple will cease and the valve will close to prevent the escape of fuel. This unit can be compliant where building and safety codes require some provision for an automatic shut off.
